America’s second offshore wind farm completes construction

Construction work on the second offshore wind farm in the U.S. has been completed, with its two turbines installed and plans for a much larger project continuing to take shape.

In an announcement Monday, Dominion Energy said that the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind pilot project — a two-turbine, 12-megawatt (MW) facility  — had been “built safely and on schedule despite the worldwide impact from the coronavirus pandemic.”

The company added that the project, which is located in waters 27 miles off Virginia Beach, would “enter service later this summer.” At its “peak output” the facility will be able to power 3,000 homes in Virginia.

Thomas F. Farrell, II, the chairman, president and CEO of Dominion Energy, described the construction of the project’s turbines as “a major milestone not only for offshore wind in Virginia but also for offshore wind in the United States.” Continue reading “America’s second offshore wind farm completes construction”

Apple investing in two onshore wind turbines in Denmark

Apple is investing in the construction of two of the world’s largest onshore wind turbines near the Danish town of Esbjerg.

World’s largest onshore wind turbines in Denmark and new clean energy efforts in Germany advance Apple’s new 2030 carbon neutral goal

Today Apple announced it will invest in the construction of two of the world’s largest onshore wind turbines, a source of clean, renewable energy that will bring its supply chain and products one step closer to carbon neutrality. Located near the Danish town of Esbjerg, the 200-meter-tall turbines are expected to produce 62 gigawatt hours each year — enough to power almost 20,000 homes — and will act as a test site for powerful offshore wind turbines. The power produced at Esbjerg will support Apple’s data center in Viborg, with all surplus energy going into the Danish grid. £320m deal allows wind farm project to proceed

A £320m deal has been agreed to allow a 50-turbine wind farm to be built in southern Scotland.

Swedish state-owned Vattenfall already had planning permission for the South Kyle scheme near Dalmellington.

It has now secured the backing of infrastructure fund Greencoat to ensure it proceeds.

Orsted set to use a massive turbine to power two of its offshore wind farms in the US

Danish firm Orsted has chosen GE Renewable Energy as its preferred turbine supplier for two offshore wind farms in the U.S. The agreement means that Orsted is set to use GE Renewable Energy’s huge Haliade-X 12 MW wind turbines at the projects.

Orsted’s use of the turbines will represent the first commercial deployment of the Haliade-X 12 MW. The deployment is subject a final agreed and signed contract and project approvals.

The two wind farms the turbines will be used at are the 120 MW Skipjack facility off the Maryland coast and the 1,100 MW Ocean Wind project off the coast of New Jersey. It’s expected that the facilities will be commissioned in 2022 and 2024 respectively.

The U.S. offshore wind industry is relatively young. Its first offshore facility, the 30 MW Block Island Wind Farm, only commenced commercial operations in 2016. The Block Island Wind Farm is located off the coast of Rhode Island and operated by Orsted. Continue reading “Orsted set to use a massive turbine to power two of its offshore wind farms in the US”

IKEA parent confirms acquisition of Vestas’ 80% stake in Romanian wind farms

Ingka Group, the parent company of Swedish furniture giant IKEA, has confirmed in a press release it has reached an agreement with Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems to acquire an 80% stake in 7 wind farm entities in South-East Romania.

Although the transaction between IKEA’s parent company and the Danish wind turbine manufacturer is signed, final completion is still subject to regulatory approval and is expected at the end of October, Ingka Group said. The Netherlands still trailing behind on EU renewable energy targets

Offshore

The Netherlands is trailing the rest of Europe when it comes to reaching sustainable energy targets, according to new figures from the European statistics agency Eurostat. In 2017, just 6.6% of the energy used in the Netherlands came from sustainable sources, but the target is 14% by 2020, Eurostat says.

Luxembourg, where 6.4% of energy consumption derived from biofuels, hydro or wind power, solar or geothermal energy in 2017, has a 2020 target of 11%. The Eurostat statistics show 11 EU countries had already reached their targets two years ago. Continue reading “The Netherlands still trailing behind on EU renewable energy targets”

Ecolab to Support Clearway’s US Renewable Energy Projects

US-based water, hygiene, energy technologies and services provider Ecolab has agreed to provide support for Clearway Energy Group’s US renewable energy projects, including a 419MW wind farm, Mesquite Star, located in Fisher County, Texas.

Under a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), Ecolab will support the construction of 100MW of new renewable electricity capacity within the Mesquite Star wind farm.

In 2015, Ecolab signed 5MW of community solar subscriptions with Clearway in Minnesota.

Ecolab corporate sustainability vice-president Emilio Tenuta said: “We continually work to improve the sustainability footprint of our customers’ and our own operations, and the renewable electricity generated from the Mesquite Star wind farm will help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020 versus a 2015 baseline.” Continue reading “Ecolab to Support Clearway’s US Renewable Energy Projects”
